Liz Davis LMSW/Therapist

KLS Therapist Liz Davis

“The grass is greener where you water it.”

Since graduating in 2016 from University of Albany with her Master’s In Social Work, Liz has gained extensive experience in helping both children and adults in outpatient mental health settings as a therapist and in other roles. Liz specializes in supporting those who are working to resolve feelings of anxiety and depression and who are working through the impact of trauma on their lives. Her approach is centered on fostering empathy and resilience, empowering the people she works with to build healthier relationships and find strength in vulnerability. She takes on the role of partner and guide to help create paths toward healing and self-discovery.

The spark that led Liz to become a therapist

I remember during recess in the first grade, sitting at the jungle gym with a notebook in hand and a line of my peers waiting to talk to me. It’s amusing to think back on now, but throughout my school years and life experiences, something always drew me back to therapy. After briefly dabbling in advertising and cultural anthropology, I came to realize that I was never going to feel passionate about any of the careers in those fields. Sadly, there was no job that I could find during this time that paid me to travel, learn about different cultures, or indulge in new foods. Pressured to find my place in the world and desperate to prove something to myself, I ended up homeless in another country. It was my biggest hurdle. Upon returning home, I channeled what I learned from this experience into volunteer work with refugees and immigrants.

Remembering my own struggles when trying to navigate a different country, and seeing the lack of support for these populations, I realized fairly quickly that helping others was going to be the focus of my career. That was when I knew it was time to return to school and complete my master’s in social work with the goal of becoming a therapist.

Liz is a Therapist who practices what she preaches.

Perspective

Life isn’t putting up walls for us to knock down but putting up walls for us to lean against, so we can stop, look around, and see what else we can take from here to grow and strengthen. No matter where we are in life, we are always learning.

Life lessons

I don’t regret the paths I’ve taken or the time spent walking them.  In part because I know wherever I am, I am there to learn something. I am there to challenge myself, and life is there challenging me. I bring that perspective into my sessions: “What is life teaching us?”

How does Liz find balance between her work as a therapist and her personal life?

We can manage our physical well-being to some extent by eating healthy and exercising, but taking care of our mental health is often the toughest challenge. Our brains are with us wherever we go. To me, life is all about balance. We need both distractions and self-care.

Having time between sessions allows me to step back and think about what I can bring into the next session. It’d crucial for me as a therapist to take a breath and engage in self-care to process things fully rather than reacting impulsively.

Outside of work, my clients sometimes pop into my mind. However, I remind myself that my role as a therapist is to provide options, support, and skills. I frequently have to remind myself that I can’t take the wheel or bear their pain, but I can help guide them forward.

In addition to daily walks or spending time outdoors for fresh air, I always try to have something to look forward to—whether it’s a family outing, gardening, hiking, kayaking, or simply playing a game.
