KLS collective therapist, Geralyn Valonzo
“Say more. Rest. Be well.”
KLS Collective Therapist, Geralyn, graduated from New York University’s Silver School of Social Work and has been practicing therapy since 2021. She has been trained in clinical work with military personnel and veterans as well as experience working with couples, children and families, immigrants and refugees, people with disabilities/terminal illnesses, and trauma. She has a unique perspective as an American-Filipino therapist. Geralyn’s diverse background and experiences have contributed to a practice rooted in authentic empathy and support.
What are some of your personal values that you turn to in life?
In my practice, I make it a point to approach each client with curiosity, compassion, and a focus on their courage—reflecting the core values of KLS Collective. Curiosity allows me to see the unique aspects of each person’s journey and to ask thoughtful, open-ended questions that invite exploration. Likewise, compassion guides my approach to ensure that clients feel safe and understood, without fear of judgment. By emphasizing their moments of courage—whether it’s the bravery to show up for therapy, make difficult decisions, or face painful emotions—I help clients recognize their own strength and resilience. It’s about honoring the steps they take, no matter how small, as part of their growth and healing process.
As a human being, I lead with empathy, both in and outside of therapy. Additionally, it’s important to me that people feel seen, heard, and validated. In my personal life, I often turn to the values of kindness, authenticity, and patience. Because of this, I believe in showing up as my true self, embracing imperfections, and extending the same grace to others. Accordingly, these values remind me to stay grounded, keep learning, and maintain a sense of balance between my own well-being and the work I do as a therapist.
Geralyn is a therapist that practices what she preaches.
Life lessons
As someone who is deeply passionate about what I do, it’s easy for me to become immersed in my work. In the past, I was so invested in my work that I struggled to make space for other areas of my life. I used to think that the more time I gave to my practice, the more I could help people. But to be fully present and effective as a therapist, I need to find space for all the other parts of my life that fuel me
Perspective
My experience growing up as an American-Filipino was that therapy wasn’t for people of color. This is a stigma I regularly encounter in Asian American communities. Both with clients and in my personal life. With this in mind, I make it a point to remind my Asian American clients (and other clients of color) that they deserve to be heard and have access to mental health care. By doing so, I aim to show up authentically, representing my American-Filipino culture as a vital part of my identity.

How Geralyn finds balance.
Over time, I’ve become much more intentional about setting boundaries and prioritizing things outside of work that bring me joy and fulfillment, such as spending quality time with loved ones, nurturing my faith, and taking care of my physical and mental health. I’ve learned that self-care is not just a catchphrase; it’s essential to being able to show up as my best self both personally and professionally. Whether it’s setting aside time for exercise, mindfulness, or hobbies that allow me to disconnect from the intensity of work, I now make sure to incorporate practices that support my own well-being.
This balance not only makes me a healthier and more centered person, but it also enhances my ability to be fully present and engaged when I’m working with clients. When I take care of myself, I can bring more energy, compassion, and creativity into my practice.
