getting to know Matthew Louie-Licensed Therapist

What inspired you to become a therapist?

For the past ten years, I have been dedicated to becoming a therapist. Initially, I aspired to be a teacher, hoping to make a meaningful impact on children and families—an ambition shaped by the inspiring role models in my own life. Like many who choose the path of education, I wanted to create change in the classroom. However, as I gained experience, I realized that many children and teenagers struggled in school due to larger systemic barriers that affected their development.

This realization led me to explore psychology, which felt like a natural next step. However, toward the end of my studies, I discovered that social work offered even greater opportunities for hands-on involvement in the field, rather than focusing solely on research. Ultimately, making the switch to social work was the best decision for me. The limitless ways to create meaningful change in people’s lives continue to inspire and motivate me every day.

Describe your therapeutic style:

My therapeutic style can be summed up in three words: humanistic, patient, and optimistic.

First, I believe in building genuine connections with my clients and allowing them to take the lead in their sessions. This approach helps me truly understand each individual, as therapy should be a space for human connection—not a mechanical process. Compassion goes a long way in making people feel seen and heard.

Second, patience is essential. Many clients may not experience the effects of medication or therapy right away, and progress can take time. However, I am committed to walking alongside each person for as long as they need, offering steady support through every step of their journey.

Finally, optimism is at the heart of my practice. Even in the darkest moments, I encourage my clients to hold onto hope, reminding them that there is always light ahead. No effort toward a better life goes unnoticed, and I strive to make sure every step forward is recognized and valued.

What makes you feel most fulfilled in your work as a therapist?

I feel most fulfilled when I see children, teenagers, families, and adults experience their “aha” moments. Watching them make surprising realizations and connect past discussions to new insights is incredibly rewarding. These moments of clarity confirm that I am exactly where I am meant to be, helping others gain a deeper understanding of themselves and their experiences.

Getting Started

Starting therapy can feel overwhelming. Many people worry that their therapist is judging every past or future decision. However, that’s simply not the case when working with someone who leads with empathy and understanding.

Relationship Building

Building a strong therapeutic relationship also means being honest and human. I openly acknowledge that I won’t always remember every name, date, or detail perfectly. Instead of making assumptions, I prioritize asking clarifying questions. Additionally, I don’t pretend to know everything outside of my expertise. Rather than seeing this as a limitation, I view it as an opportunity for curiosity and learning—ensuring that our conversations remain open, thoughtful, and rooted in honesty.

First Session

When working with me for the first time, I typically start with a structured set of questions. These include topics like developmental history, past trauma, and current stressors. However, I also want to learn about who you are beyond those experiences—your interests, where you are in life, your curiosities, dreams, and aspirations. Most importantly, I want to understand your personality.

The Pace and Space

If you’re not ready to talk about something, that’s completely okay—there’s no pressure to open up before you feel comfortable. Therapy should be a safe space, not a place where you feel forced to share. That said, the more you put into therapy, the more you gain from it. Opening up allows for deeper self-discovery, but that process takes time. I’m here to support that journey at whatever pace feels right for you.

Creating a safe and welcoming space means never pressuring you to share anything you’re not ready to discuss. To help ease into the session, I often start with a simple icebreaker and ask if you’d like to hear my answer as well. After all, trust is a two-way street.
